Bay West is seeking an Environmental Geologist Intern to work on a project related to the evaluation and remediation of a contaminated site. The primary project assigned to this individual is operation and maintenance of a contaminated groundwater pump and treat system located on the University of Minnesota West Bank.  Additional opportunities exist in our Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) program and other environmental projects.  Assignments will include working as an individual and as part of a project team to assist with any of the following tasks:


  1. Conduct bi-weekly site inspections of the project Site.  Inspections include recording system operational data, flow and pressure readings, visual observations, H2S readings, and other observations as needed. 
  2. Collect groundwater samples as required from various sampling locations throughout the project Site.  Submit the samples to a local laboratory. 
  3. Submit written field notes and photos electronically to the Bay West project manager.
  4. Be available by phone and in-person to respond to system alarm conditions as requested. 
  5. Obtain 40 Hour HAZWOPER certification. 
  1. Approximately 5-20 hours per month.

 Depending on availability and skills, other project needs could include:

  1. Provide general labor, technical and field support on various environmental site assessments; onsite investigations of contaminated soil, sediment and groundwater; construction observation; and preparation of technical reports.
  2. Oversee the proper excavation of contaminated soil during remediation and construction projects.
  3. Available to assist in Emergency Response (ER) clean-up activities for hazardous and non-hazardous material, loading, unloading, and decontaminating ER equipment in an efficient and accurate manner.  Volunteer to be part of Bay West ER On-Call teams on nights and weekends. 
  4. Communicate effectively with internal and external customers, both orally and in writing, in a courteous and professional manner of observed or perceived health, safety or other work environment conditions.



  • Working towards four-year B.S. degree in Geology, Geophysics, Geobiology, Hydrogeology, Geochemistry, Environmental Geology, or Engineering.
  • Possess proficient personal computer skills in word processing and spreadsheet applications.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills both written and verbal.
  • Superb problem-solving skills, time-management, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Valid drivers' license and good driving record.
  • Per contractual agreement between Bay West LLC and the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, applicant is required to:
  • Currently be enrolled as a student at the University of Minnesota.
  • Be available to respond to emergency calls within one hour of notification. Travel to the project site may or may not be required for each emergency call.  Student should have means of transportation to get to the Project Site (Anderson Library).
